Interferential Stimulators

Interferential therapy is a widely used form of electrotherapy that may help support pain management and rehabilitation. Advanced Rehab Technologies has experience working with interferential stimulators for patients dealing with pain-related conditions.

Typical indications for interferential stimulator use include symptomatic relief and management of chronic pain, post-traumatic acute pain, and post-surgical pain.

Common Uses

  • Pre- and post-orthopedic surgery.
  • Joint injury syndrome.
  • Cumulative trauma disorders.
  • Inflammatory conditions.
  • Pain control of various origins.

Electrode placement is often performed in an “X” pattern because the point of intersection may provide a stronger combined frequency effect.

How Interferential Stimulation Works

Interferential stimulators work by crossing two alternating medium-frequency currents that net to a biologically effective spectrum capable of penetrating deeper into soft tissue and bone.

The interferential stimulator minimizes impedance levels in the body by delivering medium-frequency current, typically in the 4000 Hz to 4150 Hz range. For example, a frequency of 4000 Hz interfering with 4100 Hz creates a third current of 100 Hz at the site of pain.

This deeper penetrating current is intended to create a physiological effect at the cellular level, which may support ion transport and help reduce swelling.

Interferential stimulation does not create strong physical movement and is generally intended to avoid excessive patient discomfort or heat generation during therapeutic use.
