How can Lymphedema be Prevented?
If you have had lymph nodes removed surgically, or if you have been treated
with radiation therapy, it is important that you protect the limb from injury.
What you should do:
Wear gloves while doing housework, gardening, or or other types of work that can
resulting even minor injuries. Why; A cut or break in the skin will allow
infectious bacteria to enter the tissue.
Never allow an injection or blood drawing in the affected extremity.
Why; Injections, or blood drawing will pierce the skin providing entry for
infectors.
Have blood pressure checked in the unaffected extremity.
Why; The inflated blood pressure cuff further limits the circulation in an
arm that already has poor circulation.
Avoid heavy lifting with the affected arm. Do not carry heavy grocery bags
etc. Why; Lifting puts strain on the arm with poor circulation, this can lead to
increased swelling.
Avoid vigorous, repetitive movement against resistance with the affected arm, or
leg ( rubbing, scrubbing, pushing, or pulling ). Why; Physical exertion causes
the blood to flow more rapidly through the muscle and tissue, further damaging
an already compromised system.
Elevate the affected arm(s) or leg(s) when ever possible.
Why; This will help improve circulation in the affected extremity.
Consult your therapist about any sports activities in which you participate.
Some sports activities may aggravate the condition. Swimming, bike riding,
walking and yoga are advised.
Why; Physical exertion forces the damaged lymphatic system to try to do work
that it cannot do.
Avoid extreme temperature changes in bathing, washing, dishes, or sunbathing.
Keep the limb protected from the sun.
Why; Heat increases blood flow through the tissues. Sudden temperature
changes causes undo stress on the weakened system.
Maintain good hygiene by keeping the skin clean, and using skin softeners.
Why; This will prevent the skin from irritation, and possible cracking,
leading to infection.
Use an electric razor rather than a blade razor.
Why; An electric razor will prevent puncturing the skin, an subsequent
infection.
Do not wear tight jewelry or elastic bands around affected fingers, arms, or
legs.
Why; Constricting items will worsen any already compromised circulatory
systems.
Avoid cutting cuticles when manicuring hands or pedicuring feet.
Why; Any skin puncture risks introducing infection.
Maintain your ideal weight through a well-balanced, low -salt diet. Avoid
smoking,and excessive alcoholic beverages.
Why; This will help you avoid excess weight, or fluid in the limbs. The more
weight you carry, the less exercise you will tend to do, and the heavier you
will get. Leading to larger limb sizes.
